This past weekend at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, NT Green reminded us that success often boils down to what you do with second chances. Despite being the top-ranked varsity hockey team during the regular season, Green heartbreakingly lost a single elimination game that kept them out of the State final and a chance at the inaugural USA Hockey High School National Tournamert.
But based on NT's season record, USA Hockey officials extended an invitation to the Green coaches and players to participate in the national competition. 24 teams from across the country participated in the tournament between April 14-18. NTG won its first three games in the round robin, beating top-ranked teams from Texas, Pennsylvania and Arizona.
Minutes before NTG took the ice to play in their semi-final game Saturday night, Loyola Gold lost 2-1 to St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida) in their semi. Green clinched its spot in the championship game by winning in the second minute of overtime play against Shaler Area/Pennsylvania, to end 5-4. Colby Atkinson was in goal for this win.
NTG and St. Thomas Aquinas squared off in a fast-paced and intense competition on Sunday morning, both vying for the first ever USA Hockey High School National Championship title. Up 1-0 at the end of the first, 2-0 at the end of the second, Green broke open the game in the third, setting a pace that ended with a 5-0 shutout win for NTG, with Greg Ogard in goal for the championship win.
Congrats to all the coaches and players on a tremendous victory!
In a resounding victory, the New Trier JV team brought home the first State Championship to the club for the '09-'10 season. Woody Steinken and Jason Weber each lit the lamp twice, while Gunnar Solberg added the night cap, to lead the team to a 5-1 victory over Barrington. Austin Rendell had two assists, and a solid performance from senior goal tender, Zack Adams, was just too much for the squad from Barrington.
Congratulations to the JV squad, the players and the coaches, on a great season and a well deserved State Championship!!!!
