The line of Ben Powell, Brad Glass and Will Cohn combined for both New Trier goals as Blue defeated Glenbrook South 2-1 in front of a packed house at Glenview Ice Center. This was a crucial game for #5 seed GBS and #6 seed New Trier as both teams looked to stay alive in the Scholastic Cup.
New Trier came out flying from the opening faceoff as Powell scored a mere eleven seconds in to the game. Coach Rob Malstrom did a brilliant job matching lines to neutralize the Titans' high scoring duo of James Philbin and Billy Savino, and was able to keep both off the scoresheet. GBS scored midway through the 2nd period on their only power play of the night, leaving the game to be decided in the 3rd period.
It looked like the game would end in a 1-1 tie, but with 1:23 left the Powell/Glass/Cohn line took the puck hard to the net, and after a goalmouth struggle Powell poked in the game winner. Winning goalie Nick Goss turned aside 25 GBS shots as Blue evened its Scholastic Cup record at 1-1. Blue figures to need two wins in its remaining three games against Stevenson, St. Viator and Highland Park in order to advance to the next round of the Metro playoffs.
New Trier Green defeated Barrington 5-2 on Tuesday evening in the semifinals of the High School Invitational Tournament to advance to the Championship Game against Stevenson, a 2-1 winner in the earlier semifinal over Loyola Gold.
Green took the lead late in a tightly played first period as Drew Koch tapped in a nice feed from Brady Arenson, for a 1-0 Green lead after the first period. The same combination struck again midway through the second period, with Koch once again converting a pass from Arenson. The Broncos fought back to within 2-1 before Bobby Acri gave Green a 3-1 lead, assisted by Will Theiss.
The score remained 3-1 midway through the third period when Barrington converted a power play opportunity to draw within 3-2. Green held on to the one-goal lead until Brady Arenson scored a pair of empty-netters in the final minute to cap his four-point night, the first assisted by Chris Deaver and the second unassisted.
Joe Talbot was strong in net for New Trier with 17 saves, sending Green to the HIT championship game on Tuesday February 7th, 7:30 at Wilmette.
