On Saturday, October 1, the New Trier Hockey Club players collected $5,373.15 to purchase Bear Hugs to make a special experience possible for a child with cancer as well as provide support services for his or her family. Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation is a national organization whose mission is to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and support to those who are touched by it. Bear Necessities was founded in 1992 in memory of eight-year-old Barret “Bear” Krupa who died after a five and a half year battle with Wilms Tumor, a pediatric cancer. To date, the New Trier Hockey Club has collected $24,800.15 to support the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation. A special thank you goes out to our community retailers who make this fund raising effort a success: The Grand Food Center, Walgreens, Dominicks, and Starbucks.
On May 1st, 1WORLD Sports hosted a High School Fitness Challenge. Forty-eight athletes, comprising eight teams, from area high schools (Orr, Collins, Foreman, Lane Tech, Latin, New Trier, Loyola and Lutheran) competed in a version of the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge. They were cheered on by parents, administrators and kids from the CHA - kids that 1WORLD has worked with this year.
By competing, these high school athletes were helping 1WORLD Sports deliver its mission of developing healthy kids and responsible athletes. Thanks to Lexie Cirrincione, Sam Belliel, Hannah Marrens, Thomas Parsons, Laura Superina and Tommy Haras as they represented New Trier Hockey in a great cause.
Founded in 1989, Cornerstone, with the assistance of the City of Chicago, purchased and rehabilitated what is now the CCO Shelter on Clifton near Broadway. The building accommodates a large kitchen/dining area, and a large dormitory for women and children. A renovation furnished a daycare center, the three intact family rooms, the adolescent boys’ dorm, new bathroom facilities with showers, the laundry room, and recreational facilities. Thanks to Coach Schlesinger and the NT JV players.
Over the following twenty years, CCO’s programs have expanded to serve over 500 men, women and children daily. With Cornerstone’s help these families and individuals can begin to build a new life, one step at a time......Click the link to learn more about Cornerstone.
Blake Segvich (NT White) and Sam Belliel (NT JV) took time to help coach the kids in the annual Watts Cup Challenge. The event raises money for child burn victims so they can attend the I Am Me summer camp. Watch the video coverage of the game. Learn more about the I Am Me Program.
Thanks Blake and Sam!
