New Trier Green battled St. Rita to the wire on Saturday afternoon at the Edge Ice Arena but fell short by a 3-2 score.
Green started the scoring with a Bobby Acri power play goal as New Trier carried the play through much of the first period. St. Rita struck for two goals late in the first period - the second with 8 seconds remaining - for a 2-1 lead after one, but Acri scored his second of the game midway through the second period to forge a 2-2 tie. Late in the second period St. Rita scored the eventual game winner on a perfectly executed 2-on-1 for a 3-2 lead at intermission.
New Trier carried the play for much of the third period but was unable to find the equalizer as St. Rita was able to hold on for the 3-2 victory to advance to the state championship game. Joe Talbot played his usual strong game in goal for Green, which held a slight advantage in shots on goal. Congratulations to Green's 16 seniors on their superb New Trier hockey careers, and to the entire team and coaching staff on an excellent season, which included 32 victories, the HIT championship and a berth in the state semifinals.
Defeats Naperville Central 3-2 to Move One Step Closer
New Trier Green defeated a tough Naperville Central squad 3-2 on Tuesday night at the Edge Ice Arena to advance to the Final Four of the High School Varsity Red Division state tournament. Green will face St. Rita on Saturday with a berth in the state championship game on the line.
A tightly played first period was scoreless until Ben Brower took a breakout pass from Gunnar Solberg to the front of the net, spun in front of the Redhawk goalie and deposited the puck in the net for a 1-0 New Trier lead. The score stood at 1-0 until Naperville Central tied the score at 1 late in the second period on a breakaway. Just when it appeared that the score would be tied heading into intermission, Green struck for two goals in the final minute of the second period, the first from Daniel Superina from the slot and the second from Solberg, tapping in a textbook feed from behind the net by Brower.
The score remained 3-1 until the final minute of the third, when with 26 seconds remaining and an empty net Naperville Central scored to cut the margin to 3-2. From there the Redhawks were held without a shot on goal for the victory.
Joe Talbot was again superb in net for New Trier with 18 saves, while Green was credited with 27 shots on goal on the night.
