After coming from behind to beat York 5-3 on Friday night, New Trier Green beat Carmel Catholic 7-1 on Sunday in a lopsided game where Trent Kadin almost stayed out of the penalty box (until 6 minutes left in the game) and Green almost had more power plays than penalty kills (not so coincidentally, also until 6 minutes left in the game). Ryan Gallagher was called for tripping 7 seconds into the game, and birthday boy Mac Zelazny scored a shorthanded goal as the penalty expired to give Green a 1-0 lead (Spencer Lifvendahl and Brian Dolby with the assists). Green went on 3 successive power plays, converting on the third with Kadin finding Lifvendahl in front of the net, who buried the puck to make it a 2-goal game. Simon Chong had a great backcheck to take away a Carmel breakaway to keep it 2-0 after 1 period of play. The second period got chippy, with both teams called for 6 penalties in the first half of the period. During 5-on-5 play after coincidental penalties for roughing, a charging Danny Pugliese buried a rebound of a Lifvendahl shot to make it 3-0 at 7:11 left in the second. Less than a minute later, Lifvendahl made a great play at the blue line to get the puck to Ryan Gallagher, who dished a beautiful pass to Charlie Ware who found the back of the net giving Green a 4-0 lead. On a Green power play with 3:52 left in the second, Kadin found Tyler Nolan who fired a rocket from the blue line, and Colin Kuker put in the rebound to make it 5-0. Lifvendahl scored on his backhand off a nice pass from Zelazny, and strong defensive play and netminding by Max Lee gave Green a 6-0 lead at the end of the second period. A Green penalty early in the third gave Carmel a power play goal and cut the lead to 6-1. Another penalty kept Green on the penalty kill, but Ryan O’Rourke stole the puck at the blue line and delivered a great pass to Dolby, who scored Green’s second shorthanded goal of the game and extended the lead back to 7-1, which would be the final score.
