In the final game of the regular season, New Trier Green beat perennial rival Loyola Gold 5-2. Spencer Lifvendahl was egregiously hooked early in the game (actual footage below) but there was no call, yet Magnus Sivertson was called for a trip that happened behind the ref, putting Loyola on an early power play. Preston Watt made a great save, and Trent Kadin had a nice steal and shot which the Loyola goalie saved. Sivertson drew an interference call, putting Green on the power play. Charlie Acri got the puck to John Babnik, who buried it to put Green up 1-0 halfway through the first. Lifvendahl was called for checking too hard, putting Green back on the penalty kill. Kadin had another steal and another breakaway chance, which resulted in another shot that was saved. Loyola was called for roughing early in the second period, but Green couldn't convert on the resulting power play. A Loyola player hit Danny Pugliese behind the net well after the whistle, putting Green back on the power play. A Sivertson blast from the point got through but sailed just high. Kadin had another good (according to Mrs. Zelazny) shorthanded chance with a wraparound on his backhand which was stopped. Kadin's GoFundMe for a shooter tutor is below. Ryan O'Rourke redirected a shot from the point by Kalev McCarthy, giving Green a 2-0 lead at 10:34 left in the second. Strong goaltending by Watt and defense by Pugliese saved a couple good Loyola chances, and Brian Dolby had a great defensive play against a Loyola odd man rush. Babnik found a charging Acri who knocked the puck down with his glove and put it in gloveside off his backhand as he was nearly on top of the net, putting Green up 3-0. (Acri clearly had a shooter tutor growing up.) A bad bounce gave Loyola a breakaway chance, but Watt made a good save. Lifvendahl was standing in the vicinity of a Loyola player who slipped into the boards and was called for BSL (Being Spencer Lifvendahl), putting Green back on the penalty kill. Tyler Nolan was called for roughing, and Loyola scored with the 2-man advantage to make it a 3-1 game. Charlie Ware found the back of the net on a great pass by Lifvendahl to put Green back up by 3 goals, but Loyola made it a 2-goal game again halfway through the third. Green's defense continued its strong play, with a huge hit by Johnny Hackett riling up the New Trier student section (which incidentally was significantly larger than the home team's). Kadin dug the puck out of the corner and got it to the middle, making a great move in front of the net before dropping a pass back to Pugliese. Pugliese fired on net and his shot was tipped by Graeme Paul to give Green a 5-2 win.

Green will be playing in a tournament in South Bend this weekend before kicking off SHL playoffs against Carmel next week. Come cheer Green on Wednesday night at Twin Rinks and Thursday night at Glacier Ice Arena.
