What would the Thanksgiving Holiday be without Hockey? New Trier's top Varsity Green team entered the 42nd annual 16 team tournament hosted by Loyola Academy.
Green played its first game at noon on Thanksgiving Day and skated away with a strong 5-1 win over Barrington. Jack Junge was solid in net for the Trevians.
Green then faced a very tough St. Ignatius team, and despite out shooting their opponent 52-23, Green needed late game heroics by Brent Segvich to tie the game as Green pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Segvich buried a rebound with 1:03 left in the game. The game finished tied 2-2.
On Saturday Green defeated a pesky team from Maine Township 3-1. With two wins and a tie, Green had to wait for the Barrington/Ignatius game to finish late Saturday evening before they knew for sure that they were advancing to Sunday’s semi-final.
Green was then matched up against Benet Academy in the semi's. Benet advanced with wins over Lake Central, Indiana (5-0), GBS (7-2) and Naperville Central (4-2).
With an early 7:00am start, Matt Solberg got Green on the board with a highlight reel rush where he went around two Benet defenders and undressed the Benet net minder to give Green a 1-0 lead with 6:55 left in period one. Benet had numerous chances including three breakaways, but Green’s Junior goalie Jack Junge denied them all. After two periods Green was being outshot 32-14. After finally waking up a bit, Green came out strong in the third period and with 4:12 left to play, Colin McBride scored on a rebound from (Ben Laukkanen and Jack Dolby) to extend the lead to 2-0. Junge was stellar stopping 39 shots and earning the shutout.
The other semi-final was GBN vs St.Rita who upset host Loyola in round-robin play. GBN came away with a convincing 6-1 win and would face Green on Sunday in the final.
After a scoreless first period in the Championship game, GBN tallied first on the power play with a slapshot from the blueline. Two minutes later, Green scored a power play goal of their own as Chris Brower shot the puck on net that found its way through a maze of players.
Brent Segvich then gave Green a 2-1 lead with a great shot to the blocker side of the GBN goalie. Both teams headed to the locker rooms after two periods for a much needed break and ice resurfacing with NTG up 2-1.
Just 34 seconds into the 3rd period Brower scored his 2nd goal of the game with assists from line mates Kevin Marren and Jason Kuker. That goal gave Green a 3-1 lead. GBN however, then cut the lead to 3-2 with 10:00 still remaining in the game. Fast paced and hard hitting hockey continued. With GBN back on the power play with under 4:00 remaining Brad Glass stole an errant pass and sent a low hard wristshot past a stunned GBN goalie to give Green a clinching goal at 4-2. Shots were close; 33-31 in NT's favor.
Matt Solberg and Jack Junge were selected to the All-Tournament team. Chris Brower was awarded the Championship Game MVP. Green improved it’s overall record to 19-3-1.
