New Trier White ended the first half of their season with a convincing 6-2 win over visiting Evanston. The onslaught started at 2 minutes of the 1st period as John Hackett scored off a beautiful feed from Dan Buddington to make it 1-0. Evanston would tie the game mid way through the first as Gabi Rodgriguez would score on a partial breakaway to even the score at 1. With Charlie Acri in the sin bin, Isaiah Gagerman took a cross ice pass from Dan Buddington and ripped a snap shot top shelf shorthanded with 4 minutes remaining in the opening frame to put the home team back on top 2-1. New Trier's patented "trap" penalty kill, worked like a charm. Not to be outdone, and with less than 1 minute remaining, Jack Marino scored on the power play with the assist going to defenseman Nolan. White leading 3-1 after 1.
The second period was a bit sloppy as both teams buckled down defensively. Evan Palatnick did score for White with just over 4 minutes gone in the middle frame unassisted on a great individual effort. White 4-1 after 2.
Johnnie Shenton made a huge save early in the final period to keep the margin at 3. White would add goals by John Hackett, (unassisted) and by Dan Buddington midway through the period to make it 6-1 White. It was clear the visitors seemed deflated once the margin was 5. Evanston would close out the scoring with 42 seconds remaining in the game to make the final White 6 Evanston 2. By garnering 2 points, White took sole possession of 1st place in the IHSHL after the first half of the season!
Notes: Congratulations to forwards Buddington and Acri along with Defensemen Gagerman and Nolan for being selected to the IHSHL ALL STAR TEAM. Those 4 will play an exhibition game at West Meadows Ice Arena on Saturday evening, January 5th.
