New Trier JV1 beat Stevenson 4-0 in a round robin matchup of the New Trier Junior Varsity holiday tournament on Saturday, December 27, 2014. New Trier jumped off to a quick lead when Robert Crane ripped a shot past Stevenson goalie, Joshua Pike, just 10 seconds into the game. They doubled their lead when Bennett Elsman scored from the blue line, with assists from Wilson Cook and Lucas Schlom. New Trier did most of their scoring in the first period, adding a third goal by Carter Heisinger to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. New Trier then added a late goal by Kyle Olson to complete a 4-0 victory. Goalie Alex Handwerker recorded a shutout for New Trier, while Stevenson goalie Joshua Pike saved 32 of the 36 shots he faced. Both teams have a quick turnaround with games the following day as New Trier JV1 will face Brother Rice while Stevenson will play Providence.
After a first period full of acrobatic saves from MUHS goaltender Zach Schmidt, New Trier was finally able to find the back of the net with a power play goal from Jason Kuker to take a 1-0 lead with just 17 seconds left to play in the period. The goal came via a pass from Brent Segvich across the crease to an all alone Kuker.
New Trier extended their lead early in the second with a goal scored by Brent Segvich. Segvich was able to take control of a bouncing rebound off a shot from Brad Glass and bury it in the back of the net.
Scoring three goals in the third period, New Trier was able to put away the Hilltoppers with a convincing win. Forward Harry Jones scored two goals in the third, and Brad Glass found himself on the scoresheet once again with a skillful deke past a Marquette defensemen, eventually finding his way to the back of the net.
New Trier High School are two time defending state Champions in Illinois, and they look to continue their success as they take on Germantown at 1pm on Monday at the Mullet Center.
Marquette will look to bounce back against Arrowhead Monday at 3pm at the Mullet Center.
