Tryouts / Regular Season

Registration for the 2025–2026 season will take place in two steps:

1. Tryout Registration - Link in below

This step collects all required player and guardian information, acknowledgment of NTHC policies, and submission of a valid Physical Exam Form

Any student currently enrolled as a Freshman through Senior at New Trier High School is eligible to try out for NTHC teams.

Important: To be eligible for tryouts, these requirements must be completed BEFORE registering.

Tryout Process

Tryouts will officially begin on August 16th, the day of the Kick-Off Meeting. Attendance at the Kick-Off Meeting is mandatory for both the player and at least one parent/guardian.

New Trier coaches will place players into initial tryout groups and assign ice times. These groupings will be posted immediately following the Kick-Off Meeting. Please note that groups will change throughout the tryout process and will be updated daily.

  • Returning players should wear their NTHC game jerseys for all tryout sessions.
  • New players to the Club will be issued a tryout pinny, which must be worn at all tryout sessions and returned at the end of the tryout period.

Additional details are posted on the right side of the screen.

Teams

New Trier Hockey Club typically rosters four varsity teams (Green, Blue, White and Gray) and one JV team. If registration numbers and make up are consistent with the past few years, NTHC may add a 6th team for the 2024-2025 season. The goal would be to roster the 6th team with primarily Midget level players (Bantam players who are not selected for one of our Varsity or JV1 teams may be encouraged to play another year of Bantam with their home club). The approach to rostering our 4 Varsity teams and JV1 will not change and like previous seasons, may include some Freshman / Bantam eligible players.

New Trier Green Varsity and JV1 teams play in the Scholastic Hockey League (SHL). NT White Varsity plays in the Academic Hockey League (AHL), a division of the SHL.

Blue and Gray Varsities play in the North Central Division of the Illinois High School Hockey League (IHSHL).

Season Duration

Tryouts begin the Saturday before classes start for New Trier High School. The season runs through mid-March depending on results of league and AHAI State Tournament.

Schedule

New Trier Hockey Club teams practice 2-3 times / week and typically play 1-2 games / week.

Game Jerseys

Players new to New Trier Hockey, will be charged for a game jersey set once offered a roster spot.

Note: Numbers will be assigned by the Equipment Manager based on open numbers and selected from the top team down. There is no requesting numbers other than the ones open. Players may not change numbers unless there is a number conflict on a rostered team.

Tournaments

All NTHC teams will participate in local pre-season tournaments early September as well as the Loyola Thanksgiving Tournament.

Out of town tournament information to follow once teams are rostered.

NTHC Rinks

New Trier Hockey Club practices and home games are held at North Shore Ice Arena, Winnetka Ice Arena, Wilmette Centennial Ice Arena and American Heartland Ice Arena.

Financial Statement / Season Fees

Hockey is a team sport that requires a significant financial and time commitment on the part of both the player and his family. Each family should evaluate before the start of the season, their ability to meet their obligations to the club as well as to the team. The cost of playing hockey has increased year to year due to higher ice costs, league fees, referee costs, coaching salaries, tournament entry, transportation, team equipment, and off-ice training.

At NTHC we make every effort to field our teams in the most cost-effective manner while giving our players every opportunity to participate at the highest level possible.

See specific season details on right side of screen.

Payment Structure

The first 1/3 of the season fees are due when a roster spot is accepted. The remaining balance (2/3 of season fees) will be spread out over 4 installments in Oct, Nov, Dec, and Jan.

Extra Costs

Once teams are rostered, there will be a team fund collection to cover expenses like team activities and other team-related events. Families should plan for this expense. The expectation is it is paid within 3 weeks of the team offer. The amount varies by team with Green Varsity being the highest.

Financial Assistance

The Club has two ways to offset the cost of hockey.

The first is through selling sponsorships in the Club’s annual Sponsor book. As in past years, 50% of the sponsor revenue (less certain deductions) generated by a player will be used to offset that player’s fee. An enterprising player can offset up to 100% of their player fee through this program. In addition, the club offers financial aid under certain circumstances.

Second, NTHC has a scholarship program to support families needing financial assistance. Program grants can cover up to 50% of player fees. Please see the Alex Pegler Fund info and / or contact the NTHC Treasurer. Please contact Rob Adam, Club Treasurer at mrobertadam@msn.com for more information or to apply. Such requests will be maintained in confidence.
