Coaching Staff

Adam joined New Trier Hockey Club Hockey Director and Head Coach for Varsity Green in 2021. In his first season, he lead NTG to SHL Champions, Illinois State Champions and Nationals Runner Up. Prior to his position as hockey director, Adam was with NT Hockey for 4 seasons as Head Coach for Gray and JV and Assistant Coach for Green, White and JV2. He led his JV team to the Illinois State Championship Elite 8 and Gray to an IHSHL League Championship.

Adam brings an abundance of coaching experience and “A culture that values dedication, integrity and teamwork as much as it does “winning.”

Growing up in Glencoe, Adam played youth hockey for the Winnetka Warriors. During his Sophomore year, he played New Trier Blue before heading to Avon Old Farms (Avon, CT) for prep school. He then played DIII for four years at Skidmore College, NY. Adam has been coaching youth/travel hockey for the past 14 years and currently, resides in Glencoe with his wife and children. 

This is Charlie’s third year assisting the Green team and fifth year as a New Trier coach, having previously coached at Loyola Academy as the Varsity Maroon head coach as well. Charlie grew up in Eagan, Minnesota before moving to Northbrook, Illinois. He played four years at Loyola Academy. Charlie then played Junior Hockey out East before his NCAA career, where he played at St Olaf College, graduating in 2018. Charlie currently coaches and serves as the Assistant Director, Mite Director and House League Director at the Winnetka Hockey Club. Charlie currently resides in Northbrook with his wife Savanna.

Jack began his New Trier Hockey Club coaching career in 2023. However, it is definitely not his first experience with New Trier Hockey. During his four years at New Trier, Jack played for NT White, Blue and Green. He helped lead Green to State Champions in 2016 & 2017 and was the MVP of the 2016 game. He was the 2017 Captain of NT Green and selected as an All State Player in 2016 & 2017. 

Jack grew up playing for the Winnetka Warriors. He split his childhood between the Winnetka Par 3 and the Winnetka Ice Rink. His youth hockey experience made for a natural fit as student coach with local summer skates and hockey camps. Jack attended the University of Denver and DePaul University. He currently resides in Winnetka.

This season marks Rob Malstrom’s 28th year with the New Trier Hockey Club. He has served as head coach for New Trier Blue, White, and JV teams. He has also coached at the Wilmette Braves and Winnetka Warriors organizations, including helping out with two of his own kids’ teams in Winnetka at the squirt and mite levels. Rob has coached Blue to two league titles in the IHSHL North Central division. While leading White, Rob’s teams made appearances in the Varsity White Division State Championship game six out of the eight years he coached them, including three state titles in 2005-06, 2014-15, and 2015-16. His one year coaching of the JV team resulted in a 2001-02 Scholastic Cup Championship.

As a player, Rob played youth hockey in Wilmette before skating three years on New Trier Green, where he won a State Championship his senior year at the old Chicago Stadium. He attended the University of Illinois and played four years on their ACHA Division I team. Rob lives in Northfield with his wife Theresa and their three children: Kennedy, Westley, and Charlotte.

This season is Mike’s 11th year coaching New Trier Blue. Previously, he spent five years coaching in the Glenview Stars organization. Mike grew up in Wilmette and played youth hockey with the Wilmette Braves before moving on to New Trier. He played one year on NT Blue and two years on NT Green, where he won a state championship in his senior year.

Mike attended Purdue University where he played four years on their ACHA club hockey team. He works at Allstate and lives in Northbrook with his wife, Samantha and their two kids.

This is Carl's ninth year coaching New Trier Blue. Prior to NTHC, Carl spent three years coaching Bantam for the Wilmette Braves. He also coached PDL Elite Hockey tournament teams. After moving to Wilmette in 2001, Carl played for the Wilmette Braves and then four years on New Trier’s JV, White, and Blue teams. At New Trier, he won a Varsity White Division State Championship on a team coached by Rob Malstrom. Carl attended St. Lawrence University, NY and played Division 2 Rugby and Club Hockey. Carl lives in Wilmette with his wife and daughter. He enjoys walks with his dogs, playing golf and men’s league hockey. 

Jeremy is in his sixth season with New Trier Hockey and his ninth season coaching at the youth level locally. He is the head coach for both NT White and Winnekta Bantam Minor. Previously, Jeremy coached NT Gray and Wilmette teams at the Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget levels. Jeremy helped establish the Midget program at Wilmette. For three seasons, Jeremy coached the Skokie Flyers. Before moving to Chicago, Jeremy coached ice and inline hockey in Colorado. 

Jeremy is a level 4 official and has been a referee for 28 seasons. He was selected to referee national Championships for the ACHA and USA Hockey and has travelled to Africa and Columbia to officiate international tournaments and to conduct training seminars for international referees.

Jeremy grew up in Detroit where he earned a scholarship to Detroit Country Day. He played club hockey while attending the University of Dubuque. Jeremy has a daughter who graduated from Michigan State, a stepson at Emerson College and a son at DePaul Prep. Jeremy works in Energy Management where he handles National Accounts.

John is in his seventh season with the New Trier Hockey Club. In addition to coaching NT White, he is the Head Coach for the Winnetka Bantam Minors. Previously, John coached NT Gray, the Wilmette Jr. Trevians CSDHL Bantam Prospects, and Lake Forest Winter Club PeeWee, Squirt, and Mite teams. In 2019, he led the AUU Mites to a league championship and the Squirts to a NIHL State championship.

At the Skokie Amateur Hockey Association, John coached the U16 Midget/Minor Elite and U18 Midgets. In 2018, he led the U18 Midgets to a NIHL Championship and a President’s Cup Championship. From 2010-18, John was coached the NWHL Midget Flyers to championship wins in 2013 and 2017 and a championship final in 2016. John is also a skills instructor and power skate coach.

This is Jack’s third season coaching for New Trier Hockey. He joined us from the Chicago Stallions organization, where he coached for four years in their Bantam program. Jack grew up in the city playing for the Chicago Jets and attended Eaglebrook School and Berkshire School in Sheffield, Massachusetts, where he played hockey all four years. Jack currently works as a Project Manager for Duck Stop Travel Center and lives in Chicago.

This is Troy's fourth season coaching for the New Trier Hockey club but he has had a long coaching career for his age. He started teaching "learn to skate" classes, assisting on his father's mite and squirt teams and aiding the Winnetka Hockey Club with clinics at the age of 14.

While in high school at New Trier, Troy also began working with Wilmette Hockey Club teaching in their skills clinics. He grew up playing for the Winnetka Hockey Club before playing on White and Blue at New Trier.

This is Brennan’s second season coaching New Trier Gray. Brennan grew up in Rhode Island, where he played for the Providence Collegeaffiliated Providence Hockey Club’s AAA team before spending three years at Pomfret School in Pomfret, Connecticut, competing in the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association (NEPSIHA).

After high school, he attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he played all four years for the ACHA Division II team. During his time with Denison, the team competed in the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League (ACCHL), earning three regular season championships, one playoff finals appearance, and two semi-final appearances.

After graduating, Brennan spent the summer at home in Rhode Island before relocating to the Chicago area in mid-August. He recently began working as an Operations Executive for Coast to Coast Logistics in Deerfield.

This season marks Josh’s second year coaching with the New Trier Hockey Club, and his first season coaching overall. He joins the organization with extensive experience as a professional-level official, having worked more than 150+ games across pro, college, and junior leagues.

Originally from Jackson, Michigan, Josh played AA and AAA hockey before attending Eastern Michigan University, where he was a walk-on for both the cross country and track teams. He relocated to Chicago in 2016 and currently works in marketing for James Hardie.

This is Brandon's third year coaching at New Trier. In the 2025-26 season he coached the JV1 team to the 2026 SHL and State Championships. Brandon brings 5 years of coaching experience as the Head Goalie Coach at Lake Forest Academy Hockey Camps.

Growing up in Wadsworth, IL, he grew up playing for Kenosha Komets and Highland Park Falcons, before attending Lake Forest Academy, where he played on both Varsity and Prep/U18 AAA teams.

Brandon graduated from Boston University's Questrom School of Business in 2017. He currently works and lives in the Chicago area.

This is Mario's second season with NTHC. In his first season he coached the JV1 team to the 2026 SHL and State Championships. He brings over seven years of coaching experience, including time with Michigan State Univeristy's ACHA D2 program, the Palm Beach Hawks U10 team, and Lake Forest Academy Hockey Camps.

A Northbrook native, he grew up playing for the Chicago Blues, winning a U12 AA National Champsionship. He attended Lake Forest Academy, where he played on the Varsity and Prep teams and was names an MPHL All-Star as a senior.

Mario earned a degree in Economics from Michigan State University, where he also played on the ACHA D2 hockey team. He later completed his MBA from Florida Gulf Coast Unviersity wtih a concentration in Data Analutics. Currently, he works as a Senior Data Analyst for Walgreens and resides in Chicago.

This is Preston’s second year coaching with New Trier. In the 2025-26 season he coached the JV1 team to the 2026 SHL and State Championships. He grew up in Highland Park and played youth hockey for the Falcons and the Ice Dogs. He went on to Lake Forest Academy, where he skated for both the Varsity and Prep/U18 AAA teams.

He continued his career at Western New England University, earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, finishing in 2019. He now lives in Chicago and works for Pepper Construction.

This is Matt’s sixth year coaching New Trier Hockey Club. Prior to this role, he spent three years as an Assistant Coach for NT Green, helping lead the team to three State Championships.

Matt is deeply familiar with the local hockey community. He grew up in Kenilworth and played youth hockey for the Winnetka Warriors before going on to play four years of New Trier Hockey. He was a member of NT Green in 2014 and 2015 and won a state championship.

Matt graduated from the University of Illinois and currently lives and works in the Chicago area.

This is Brent’s fifth year as a coach for New Trier Hockey Club. Previously, he coached for the Winnetka Warriors. Brent brings his continued experience as a private skills coach to New Trier Hockey.

Brent’s player career stretched from the Winnetka Warriors to three years for the Chicago Young American’s and three years playing for New Trier Green. While playing for New Trier Green, Brent won the 2013 and 2014 State Championships.

Brent graduated from the University of Iowa in 2019. Currently, he works and lives in the Chicago area.

Oliver is in his sixth season as Goalie Coach for the New Trier Hockey Club. He has coached goalies since 2007, serving as the Goaltending Director for the CSDHL Goaltending Director and Tier 1 as a Goalie Coach. He has advanced 19 goalies to Tier 1, Prep, and Juniors. He also advanced goalies in the OHL and NCAA.

Oliver helped the Falcons win their first USA Hockey National Championship. He also helped lead the Chicago Mission to Nationals Championships in 2022 with the 2006 and 2007 birth years. At the Mission, Oliver had two goalies selected to the NTDP’s 40-man camp and helped the Mission place their first goalie in the NTDP. He also guided three goalies to NCAA Division 1 commitments, and two signed to play in the OHL.

A University of Utah graduate, Oliver played four years of club hockey and was a backup goalie for the ECHL Utah Grizzlies. He is currently an emergency backup goalie for the Chicago Blackhawks and resides in Chicagoland, enjoying soccer and concerts in his free time.
